Face-lift for Genetics Education Website
People looking for information about genetics and medical problems related to genes need look no further as the NSW Health Centre for Genetics Education launches its new-look website: www.genetics.edu.au.
The website provides an up to date information resource for people and families wishing to learn more about how genetic health issues can impact on them.
“Our website has always been a one stop shop for people wanting to learn about genetic health. We currently have about 27,000 online visitors per month and are excited that our new look site will make it even easier for people in the community to use.” Says Ms Mona Saleh, Deputy Director of the NSW Centre for Genetics Education.
“We get lots of positive feedback about our web resources, particularly the Fact Sheets which people find clear and easy to read” she said.
Some useful Fact Sheets include:
• Cystic Fibrosis
• Genetic aspects of breast, ovarian and bowel cancer
• Genetic aspects of mental illnesses
• Neural Tube defects – Spina Bifida and Anencephaly
• Cloning

In addition to the fact sheets which address everything from “What is DNA?” to “Ethical issues in genetics”, there is also a new dedicated section on “Pregnancy Preparation”. This new section will provide the latest expert advice on optimising women’s health and wellbeing when planning a pregnancy.
Other highlights of the new website include:
• A search box allowing the most relevant information to be sourced
• A multicultural section with links to information in languages other than English
• An updated Glossary containing more definitions than ever before
• Information sections for individuals, families, schools and health professionals
“The website is our best way to communicate accurate genetics information to the widest audience possible. Our team has worked hard to make this new site as user friendly as possible” Mona said.
The NSW Centre for Genetics Education is based at Royal North Shore Hospital.
