Media Release 05 Oct 2007

Mental health week art exhibition at Hornsby TAFE gallery

When words aren’t enough – art heals and enriches - Mental health week art exhibition at Hornsby TAFE gallery

A unique exhibition of art work and pottery will be open to the public for one week from Monday 8 October 2007.

The works have been created by clients of Macquarie Hospital at North Ryde and the exhibition coincides with Mental Health Week (8-12 Oct).

The Art Resource and Pottery Studios at Macquarie provide opportunities for both novice and experienced artists to express thoughts and feelings when words are often inadequate.

Creating works of art plays an important role for many during the process of recovery, enriching lives, building self esteem, find new strengths and increased confidence.

Some artists, whose works will be on display, commit to many hours in the studio and regard themselves as part of the established ‘art world’. Others are considered ‘outside artists’, part of an art movement which includes artists who may be untrained and operate outside the formal world of art.

‘Relationships in the community’ is the theme for this year’s Mental Health Week and the Hornsby TAFE exhibition demonstrates and builds on the connections between art services, mental health clients and local education facilities.
