Science Meets Medicine

The Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) 24th annual scientific research forum will officially be opened on Tuesday, 13 November 2007 by the Honorable Verity Firth, MP, NSW Minister for Science & Medical Research.

The forum, which continues on Wednesday 14 November 2007, is an opportunity for Australia’s top medical researchers to report on innovative health care.

The forum is sponsored by the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney.

Researchers at RNSH, the University of Technology Sydney and the Kolling Institute will have the opportunity to attend more than 35 oral presentations, 92 poster presentations and a variety of tutorial sessions and trade exhibitions.

Aspiring medical researchers have submitted poster displays and entered the Young Investigator Award, the winner of which receives a $4,000 international travel grant.

Prizes and give-aways associated with the forum total more than $12,000.

There are a series of fascinating speakers and gripping topics including:

Tuesday 13th November
9.15am: Professor Robert Graham, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
Topic: Cardiac Regeneration and Repair.

1.00pm: Professor Johan Duflou, NSW Institute of Forensic Medicine
Topic: Aviation Pathology – The Medical Investigation of Fatal Air Crashes.

Wednesday 14th November
9.00am: Professor Sam Breit, The Centre for Immunology Darlinghurst
Topic: Role of the TGF-ß Superfamily Cytokine MIC-1 in The Biology of Cancer

1.00pm: Dr Geoff Lindeman, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
Topic: Breast Stem Cells and their Descendents –Getting Abreast of Breast Cancer

The Scientific Research Forum will be held in the Centenary Lecture Theatre, Reserve Road, RNSH.
