Mohammed moves mountains at Ryde Hospital
The last position Mohammad Aymal, sterilising technician at Ryde Hospital, held in his native Afghanistan was as executive director of Kart Sea Hospital funded by the internationally respected ‘Medicines Sans Frontier’ and the International Red Cross.
Mohammad migrated to Australia from Afghanistan in 2001 bringing with him tertiary degrees in medicine, Afghani accreditation as a doctor and seven years experience in public and private hospitals.
Mohammad took 14 years of medical knowledge, thousands of medical terms and did it all again in a foreign language while working in both paid and unpaid employment.
He has now completed the lengthy process of gaining recognition for his qualifications and successfully passed his Australian Medical Council exams.
During his appointment he practiced in various speciality areas and worked with doctors from Australia, France and the United Kingdom.
However, before practising in Australia, overseas trained doctors must pass Australian medical officer exams. This measure ensures overseas trained doctors can communicate effectively with patients and highlights any differences in medical training and education.
The Australian Medical Council Exam consists of three parts. The first is an English assessment, followed by a 270 question multiple choice paper covering all aspects of medicine from surgery to paediatrics. The final element is a clinical exam where students treat real patients with ‘real life’ complex conditions.
The final part is often the most difficult because overseas trained doctors may not actively practice medicine while studying for these exams.
To assist in this component Mohammad worked as a clinical observer in Ryde Hospital’s Emergency Department. He observed treatment, systems, reporting and handovers.
“In Afghanistan we used the USA system of medicine, whereas in Australia we use the UK system. However, ultimately it’s the same diseases and the same treatment”, Mohammad explains.
He modestly attributes his success to those who have helped and supported him in Australia for seven years.
“The team here at Ryde is fantastic. They have provided me with so many opportunities, much information and have been incredibly flexible with shift rostering. Thank you to all my friends and family. I could not have achieved this without you.”
Congratulations Dr Mohammad Aymal!
