ABOUT THE PROJECTBuilding on tradition...Royal North Shore Hospital and Community Health Service has been looking after people for almost 120 years. As one of Sydney's oldest and most well-respected hospitals, Royal North Shore (RNS) is renowned for compassionate patient care, world-class research and commitment to educating the health professionals of the future. The NSW Government's $736 million redevelopment of RNS will ensure that the tradition of care continues into the next generation and beyond with contemporary new facilities to support the delivery of best practice healthcare. The redevelopment will consolidate 53 buildings, many of them no longer fit for purpose, into two accessible, patient-centred facilities. It will deliver a new building for community health, and a new hospital building with new operating theatres, wards and outpatient (ambulatory care) facilities. The RNS Redevelopment will be the biggest health capital project ever undertaken in NSW and represents a significant investment in the future health and well-being of our community. The aim is to deliver quality health care services and sustainable, purpose-built facilities which represent good value for money. The new main hospital and community health facilities will be constructed as joint venture with the private sector. The successful Project Company is expected to be announced in mid-2008. "Business as usual" during constructionDuring construction, it will be business as usual at RNS. Although there may be some inconvenience from time to time, there is already a carefully staged plan in place to deliver the new facilities with as little disruption to services as possible. Early works for the redevelopment of the Royal North Shore have begun; the new $99 million Kolling building for research and education is now nearing completion and will be ready for occupation by September 2008. Once the research and education activities in the centre of the campus are consolidated into the new building, the demolition of a number of older buildings, no longer fit for purpose, will create the space for the new main building. We will keep you informedWe will keep you up-to-date about the project, and advise you promptly if we expect any impact from the construction program. Planning and building new health care takes time - we appreciate your patience while we complete these vital projects.
