Vanderfield BuildingLast updated: 25 March 2009
The Vanderfield Building was the original hospital building opened in 1902 and renamed in honour of the late Dr Roger Vanderfield. Is the Vanderfield Building going to be demolished? No. There has been staff and community concern about recent media reports regarding the demolition of this building, but there was never a plan to demolish it. Is the building going to be sold? The Vanderfield Building is currently included in the land to be sold in the future to fund the RNS Redevelopment. When will a decision be made about its future? Fortunately, a final decision on long-term use of this building will not be made until at least 2013. That leaves plenty of time to explore the possibilities for the future of the Vanderfield Building. Is it heritage listed? The Vanderfield Building is identified as within a precinct which, as a whole, has heritage value. At the moment it is not strictly under any heritage order, either through Council or the State. However its significance has been recognised and the NSW Department of Planning will be applying conditions to its ultimate redevelopment which will recognise its status. This may include restoration, complementary uses and reinstatement of gardens, finishes and key features. If it is sold in the future, what can it be used for? The uses to which the building will be put will be determined by a Project Application assessed by the Minister for Planning and while this could include retail and/or office space, it could also include community facilities, or any other appropriate reuse of the facility. Any reuse of the buildings in the heritage precinct would be expected to be sympathetic to the location, context, history and character of these buildings.
