Overview

Macquarie Hospital is a 195 bed specialized mental health residential facility for adults with a serious mental illness or disorder. It is gazetted under the NSW Mental Health Act, 1990. Acute services are provided for Ryde/Hunters Hill residents and rehabilitation/extended care services for those who live in the catchment areas of Northern Sydney Central Coast Health Service. The hospital's clinical areas include a 14 bed acute admission unit, providing assessment and short term treatment for patients requiring acute psychiatric care, eight rehabilitation units providing medium and long-term mental health rehabilitation and extended care and six `day program' areas.

Future Directions

Macquarie Hospital is involved in a major planning project to develop an evidence-based service model for the future delivery of mental health services involving Northern Sydney and Central Coast catchment areas for the next ten years.

This includes the development of a Procurement Feasibility Plan for a proposed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit which may be developed on the Macquarie campus.

Macquarie Hospital executive are developing a Business Plan for the year 2004-2005 which will include:

  • Engaging key stakeholders in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of hospital services.
  • Involvement in the completion and development of a Service Plan for Area Mental Health Services.
  • Staff reward and recognition program
  • Assisting with compilation of a Workforce Plan for NSH and Central Coast Mental Health Services.
  • Active participation in our local community to improve understanding of mental illness.
  • Developing and strengthening Clinical Governance.
