Welcome to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service. Our staff are here to provide you with the best possible standard of care and friendly service. We are committed to continual improvement, so should you have any concerns or suggestions during your stay in hospital, please advise your nursing staff and we will do our best to help you. We hope your stay is comfortable and that you soon return to full health.

Your admission to Hospital will either be planned for surgical or medical reasons or it will be an emergency. This fact sheet will help you to understand the admission process that you will go through and what to bring to hospital for a planned admission.

Planned admissions

If you are a planned admission please follow the signs to the Admission & Day Surgery Centre on your arrival at the Hospital. An Admission Officer will attend to the paperwork associated with your stay. Please note that you may have received special instructions concerning your admission, which you must follow.

There are five minute patient drop-off and pick-up spaces available for the Admissions and Day Surgery Centre by entering through Gate 8 on Derby Road. There are parking spaces on Derby Road and surrounding streets. If you are arrriving by bus, follow the signs to Admissions.

  1. Day surgery patients

You will be admitted through the Admissions and Day Surgery Centre. Following your procedure you will be transferred to the Day Only Unit located within the Centre and discharged from that area on the same day.

  2. Patients who will be staying overnight or longer, who are admitted on the day of surgery

If you are coming into hospital for more than one day and are arriving on the day of your surgery, you will remain in the Admissions reception area until your scheduled theatre time, after which you will be transferred to a ward.

  3. All other admissions

The Admission staff will direct you to your assigned ward area.

Emergency admissions

If you require emergency treatment or special admission, please go to the Emergency Department.

People usually use Emergency Departments after an accident or in the case of a serious illness that has come on suddenly.

Emergency Departments treat people on the basis of the seriousness of their health problems rather than on the basis of who arrives first.

Once you have been assessed by the medical staff in the Emergency Department, you may need to be admitted to hospital.

The time you wait for treatment or admission for non-emergency health care will depend on an assessment of your health problem and the availability of the specialist health care that you need.

Children’s admissions

We encourage parents to stay with their children in hospital as much as possible. Children benefit from the comfort of their parents' presence during procedures, such as the giving of anaesthetic, and when they wake up.

We can provide overnight accommodation for one parent only at the hospital. A recliner is available beside the child's bed, or if you prefer, a parent’s room with comfortable beds, bathroom facilities, television, telephone and small kitchenette. Please make alternative arrangements for other siblings. For further information please refer to our Child and Adolescent Unit page.
