What should I bring when I come to hospital?

We have a fact sheet to help you with this information: 'Coming to hospital'. We also have our latest Patient Information Booklet available for you to read.

Why do I need to come to a preadmission clinic?

Some patients who are booked in for an operation are asked to attend the Pre-Admission Clinic before their day of operation. It is here that the bulk of the admission process is carried out. This ensures that on the day of operation most of the patient preparation has already been done and that the patient is medically fit for the procedure. Procedures done at the Pre-Admission Clinic include paperwork (form filling), patient’s medical history, tests such as blood tests, ECG, blood pressure/pulse. The patient is advised when to fast from and which medications they should and should not take on the day of the operation. Any potential problems should be highlighted by the patient attending the Pre-Admission Clinic. This ensures a smooth and quick admission on the day of surgery with results of tests already available.

Can I get my admission date for elective surgery from the Hospital Admissions Department?

Your admission date for elective surgery will be given to the Hospital by your specialist doctor. The Hospital will then confirm your admission date with you, but the date will be allocated by your doctor.

I already have a specialist doctor. Can I have my elective surgery in Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital?

This will depend on several factors, such as whether or not your specialist has admitting rights to HKHS and whether the procedure that you need is usually performed at the hospital. You can see details of some of the specialists at HKHS on our Alphabetic list of Doctors, links to doctors by speciality and information on some of the specific procedures performed at HKHS

Can I come in as a private patient, even though HKH is a public hospital?

You can be admitted as a private patient to a public hospital. This will mean that you are able to have the specialist of your choice, if your specialist has admitting rights to the Hospital.

Can I stay with my child while she's in hospital?

Yes- parents are encouraged to stay with their children. Our Child and Adolescent Unit has a parents' room with sofa beds and there are also recliner chairs in the wards, if you would prefere to sleep next to your child.

If you don't want to sleep at the Hospital, we also have 24-hour visiting for parents so that you can visit your child at any time.
