The Chaplain's Department aims to provide care that contributes to the healing ministry of the institution through the fostering and nurturing of the total well-being of our patients, their relatives and friends, our staff and the wider community.

Who are we?

The Chaplain's Department of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service. We are an inter-denominational, multi-faith department. We have a full-time Anglican chaplain, and 24-hour, seven day a week coverage for Anglicans and Catholics. All other denominations are covered "on-call". We are supported by an inter-denominational lay visiting team and a Catholic lay sacramental team.

What do we do?

The chaplaincy service provides spiritual and pastoral support to patients, their relatives, staff, and the local community serviced by the Hospital. The department's chaplains are available to support people in times of crisis, anxiety, suffering, grief, loss and death; and when their faith system is under stress, as well as at times of celebration. This may extend to education, ethical decision making, advocacy, celebration of rites, prayer & counsel. In fulfilling this, the department attempts to provide a 24 hour, seven day a week service.

How you can access our service

The best way to access our service is via the Hospital paging system through the switchboard (9477 9123). Ask to have the Chaplain paged, particularly if your call is urgent. Please give your name and a contact number, so that we can call you back if we are temporarily unavailable.

Where you can find us

The Cottage Chapel is a historic stone cottage in the midst of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital campus, to the rear of the Lumby Building and adjacent to Hydrotherapy. The building should be open for prayer and meditation seven days per week, from approximately 8am until 5pm. The closest Hospital entrance point is through the Lowe Road parking area.

The Chaplains' offices are within the Chapel building. Because we may be out of the office, you may need to leave a message via the hospital switch.

What are our hours?

We are a 24-hour, seven day a week service.

How you can contact us

Via phone to the Hospital switchboard on 9477 9123 and ask to have the Chaplain paged. Please give your name and a contact number, so that we can call you back if we are temporarily unavailable. You might also like to indicate which denomination Chaplain you would like to conatct you.

When you arrive

If you are coming in for an appointment, knock on the Chaplain's door and wait in the anteroom. If you do not have an appointment, or if the building is unattended, go to the switchboard in the main building and ask to have the Chaplain paged.

More information

The Chaplain's Department is organised as a department of HKHS. We are assisted by an inter-denominational team of skilled lay (not ordained) visitors. Our services are free and appropriate confidentiality is observed at all times.

The Cottage Chapel was originally built in the 1890s and was owned by George Collingridge, founder of the Royal Art Society of NSW. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1977, under the direction of, and funded by, a group of volunteers.
