How you can access our service

The paediatric service at HKH can be accessed in two ways:

  1. Through the Emergency Department. Paediatric specialists are available at HKHS Emergency DepartmentThe Emergency Department at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is open 24 hours a day for children and adolescents requiring medical care. The Emergency Department has a separate area with 4 beds for young patients, where they can be assessed and be given treatment in a child friendly environment away from adults who also require medical attention. This makes it easier for the young patients, their families and our staff. Depending on the child’s condition, he/she may be discharged home from the Emergency Department (after arrangements for follow-up with either your General Practitioner or a Paediatrician have been made) or may be admitted to the Paediatric Unit for further in-hospital care. The dedicated paediatric emergency area is very closely linked to the Paediatric Unit.

  2. Elective Admission. The preadmission clinic at HKHS is a valuable opportunity for your child to become familiar with hospital proceduresYour child’s medical or surgical specialist may arrange for him/her to be admitted to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. This admission will be organised by the hospital’s booking office .To facilitate the admission, you may be asked to bring your child to a Paediatric Pre-admission Clinic held in the Paediatric Unit. This clinic provides an opportunity for you and your child to become familiar with the ward environment and procedures. You will also have the opportunity to see a doctor and discuss any concerns you may have.
