What do we do?

The Weight for Health group program has been running since 2005 with great success. It is a weekly one hour session run by Accredited Practicing Dietitians, designed to give adults the tools to lose weight and keep it off.

The program aims to give you the correct nutrition information you need to lose weight and then assist you to put this into practice. Often we know what changes need to be made but struggle to make and maintain the changes. The sessions are very practical and it is motivating and encouraging to talk with other group members who share the same struggles and have found good ideas and solutions. The groups are very friendly and supportive.

Each week we will include revision of the previous week with an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas or changes made, the topic of the day, handouts and an activity or practical example of ways to start making changes. You will have an opportunity to write your goals in the first session and we will use health coaching principles to assist you to achieve these goals. Many areas will be covered including:

  • Healthy eating
  • Fats and Cholesterol
  • Carbohydrates and Glycaemic Index
  • Activity and Exercise
  • Eating out and takeaways
  • Recipe Modification
  • Listening to your appetite
  • Metabolism
  • Stress management
  • Reading food labels

Participant comments:

  • I’ve enjoyed the whole course. As well as educating I have to say it’s been fun.
  • For the first time in ten years I have photos of myself. I have lost some weight but more importantly, I feel good inside
  • I am no longer rebelling and emotional eating. I am calmer and happier. The bonus is I am now down a size in clothing
  • I have cut my fat and sugar intake. I can now walk to the village without pain. I do as much incidental exercise as possible.

Things liked about the program:

  • Interaction in the class. We were all having the same sort of challenges
  • I liked that we could ask any question and it would be answered
  • Presentation was excellent – really changed thinking about what I am eating
  • Encouragement
  • Very easy going. Good group discussion – not being lectured
  • Atmosphere of shared problems
  • The variety and other people’s thoughts and ideas
  • I loved that the entire program was informative yet relaxed and friendly. I enjoyed the content on label reading the most
  • Having a dietitian available at all times to answer questions
  • Learning lots – didn’t think I had much to learn about weight loss/nutrition etc but I was wrong!
