The HKHS Emergency Department aims to provide a high quality emergency service to the community. We are an
accredited teaching site for emergency care and have trainees and consultants, working together to provide patient care.
The Emergency Department works closely with the Acute and Post Acute Care (APAC) team and the Aged Care Services in Emergency Team (ASET).
The Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) is a short stay ward for patients being admitted to hospital for less than 24 hours and is run in
conjunction with the Emergency Department.
Who are we?
The Emergency Department of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service.
How you can access our service
The Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day to all members of the public with an emergency medical problem.
Patients should first come to the triage desk where they will be seen by an experienced member of the nursing staff.
Where you can find us
From 8am on 28 November 2006 we will be in a brand new building (building 50) on the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital Campus, off Palmerston Rd, Hornsby. The entrance to

For the safety of our patients this is a secure building. If you arrive after 10pm please use the intercom near the Emergency Department
entrance doors to communicate with staff, who will enable you to access to the building.

When you arrive
When you arrive at the Emergency Department you will initially be seen by the Triage Nurse at the counter at the front of the waiting room.
What is Triage?
In Emergency the sickest patients are seen first. This means that patients with possible life threatening illnesses are treated as soon as possible. “Triage” is the process where patients are seen as they arrive by an experienced nurse and given a category depending on the severity of their illness. The same Triage Category system is used throughout Australia.
The Triage Nurse sees patients arriving by Ambulance as well as those who walk in.
If the Triage Nurse decides that you need immediate care, you may be taken directly to a bed in the Emergency Department. Alternatively you may be asked to wait in the waiting room
until the doctor is able to see you.
