The Hornsby General Practice Unit,
provides continuing, whole patient care to people in the local community, as well as many
staff from Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service. We see a full range of patients from young
families to the elderly and offer care to nursing home and hostel patients. The Unit is one of a
few practices in NSW that provide an opportunity for Junior Medical Officers to work in general
practice. Each year ten second year graduate doctors (RMO 1s) spend five weeks each working in the practice.
They work under close supervision, and receive feedback and teaching about their
communication skills and consultation methods. We are also a teaching practice with Sydney
University and Sydney Institute of GP Education and Teaching. The GP Unit is a Department of
Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service.
Who are we?
Hornsby General Practice Unit, part of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service. Doctors Penny Browne, Liz Marles, Narelle Shadbolt and Simon Willcock are the medical directors of the Unit. They all are experienced GPs with a background in medical education.
They are all involved in a number of related educational and research activities. The reception staff provide a warm, friendly and efficient front desk
operation, as well as supporting the Directors in their many activities. They are the glue that keeps the Unit together and make it a happy environment to work in.
What do we do?
The Hornsby GP unit provides continuing, whole patient care to people in the local
community as well as many staff from Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. We now see around 600
patients a month at Hornsby, and a further 200 at Brooklyn. We see a full range of patients
from young families to the elderly, and hence a full spectrum of illness patterns. We offer
care to nursing home and hostel patients, and have close association with hospital based
teams, including aged care, mental health, maternity and child health.
We see our role at the GP Unit as providing a first class medical service to our patients,
whilst maintaining our focus on teaching. The Unit is one of a few practices in NSW which provide
opportunity for Junior Medical Officers to work in general practice. Ten second year graduate
doctors (RMO 1's) spend five weeks each, working in the practice annually. They work under close
supervision allowing them the opportunity to develop an understanding of both general practice
and community health. They also receive feedback, and teaching about their communication skills
and consultation methods.
The practice is accredited with AGPAL and is a teaching practice with the Sydney Institute
of GP Education and Training, and we have a GP Registrar (doctor in specialist training) working
in the Unit. We are a teaching practice with Sydney University and regularly have medical students
in the Unit.
The GP Unit is also a Department of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service. We are a part of the
team of health care workers that contribute to the health of the local community. We bring a
GP focus to many aspects of the hospital and contribute to the continuity of patient care.
