Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service has had a strong connection with the community since it began services in 1933 as Hornsby Hospital. This section of our website gives you a glimpse of the early beginnings of our service.

The early days

"The opening of Hornsby Hospital was blessed with glorious sunshine, surrounded by unparalleled scenic views and attended by 5,000 enthusiastic folk. No wonder Hornsby Hospital’s opening ceremony will go down in history as the most outstanding event in the annals of the district. This must be taken as public approval of the work of every individual connected with every auxiliary together with the professional gentlemen, secretaries and organisers that for years has had one objective - Hornsby HospitalThe opening of Hornsby Hospital was blessed with glorious sunshine, surrounded by unparalleled scenic views and attended by 5,000 enthusiastic folk. Extract from The Hornsby Advocate 31st August 1933

Official opening of Hornsby Hospital, 1933Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital was officially opened on Saturday, 26th August 1933 by His Excellency, Sir Phillip Game, Governor of NSW. The area served by the hospital originally covered 200 miles of territory with a population of 16,000 adults to be catered for.

At its opening, the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital had accommodation for 43 beds and the first patient was admitted on 28th August 1933. The original proposal to establish a hospital came in 1913, with the suggestion that a simple building be erected at a price of 1500 pounds. However, it was noted that it could not possibly he done for that amount and every assistance was brought together to try to further the scheme.

This original attempt was soon abandoned. It was not until ten years later that a serious attempt was made, with the formation of the Hornsby and District Hospital Committee. In the years that followed the community banded together to raid funds as they became united in the goal of a public Hospital for the Homsby area. In 1933 the dream became a reality.

"The Hornsby and District Hospital, now that it is established, will occupy a very large place in the hearts of the people in the district and there should be no difficulty, provided the right spirit is maintained, in finding the necessary amount for the equipping and upkeep of the institution"
Sir Edgeworth David, Chairman of the Hospital Board, 1933

The words of words Sir Edgeworth David rang true and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, founded on community support, still occupies a large place in the hearts of the people in the district. Without the generous and ongoing assistance from our close-knit community our hospital could not be the caring and high-quality institution that it is today.
