Occupational therapists aim to improve or maintain independence of
people in activities of daily living: work/school, play/leisure, personal care and household tasks.
Diversional therapists provide individual and group recreation activities for clients.
Who are we?
The Occupational Therapy and Diversional Therapy Department of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service
is a team of therapists who provide a range of services to both adults and children, either as
inpatients (patients admitted to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital) or outpatients (people not in hospital). Services are provided to clients who live in the Hornsby and
Ku–ring-gai local government areas.
What do we do?
The principal areas covered by the department include: acute
medical/surgical wards, emergency department, EMU ward, Rehabilitation and Aged Care Service (including inpatient, outpatient and home visiting service), paediatrics (outpatients), and
extensive mental health services (inpatients and outpatients). We also provide a service by
referral to the Intensive Care Unit, Child and Adolescent and Maternity wards.
Occupational therapists work very closely with clients and their carers to achieve
mutually agreed upon goals for independence in daily living skills. This may include:
- education on resuming tasks of daily living
- prescriptions for equipment
- home assessments
- prescription of assistive equipment and home modifications
- living skills programs for community living
Diversional therapy aims to provide individual and group recreation activities
to enable people to remain active in the community and to improve social skills.
How you can access our service
As an inpatient- if you or your family
would like to have occupational therapy involvement in your care, please ask a member of your
health care team to refer you.
As an outpatient- you do not need a written referral
from a Medical Practitioner and can contact the appropriate occupational therapy area directly.
You will need to live within within the Hornsby or Ku-ring-gai local
