More information
What is a PEG?
PEG stands for Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG). This is a feeding tube that is inserted into the stomach, directly through the abdominal wall. It involves having
an endoscopy and a small incision on the skin over the abdomen. The majority of gastrostomy tubes are inserted for long term enteral feeding. Note that gastrostomy
tubes may be inserted surgically. A gastrostomy is considered for people who for a variety of reasons, such as stroke, cancer, surgery or other neurological conditions,
may be unable to eat or drink enough to meet adequate nutritional requirements.
Clinic availability:
The clinic is available to all adults living in the Hornsby or Ku-ring-gai area who have a PEG tube or are considering PEG tube insertion. This includes patients who
have had their PEG inserted at hospitals other than HKH. It is preferable that patients seen in the clinic reside in the community, or are residents of a hostel
(low level care).
A patient may be seen in the PEG clinic for:
- Consideration of PEG insertion
- Consideration of PEG removal
- Revision of enteral nutrition regime
- Revision of PEG site and infection control needs
- Re-assessment of swallowing
- Education and support
