The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service Speech Pathology Department mission is to promote and facilitate effective communication and swallowing function, in order to maximize quality of life and social participation in the community.

Who are we?

The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service Speech Pathology Department is a team of adult and paediatric (children’s) speech pathologists. We provide a range of speech pathology services to individuals with communication disabilities, in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai area.

There are a lot of myths about what speech pathologists actually do.

We are able to assist children and adults if they have difficulty with:

  • Swallowing

What do we do?

Speech Pathologists assess, diagnose and treat children and adults with difficulties in the areas of language, speech, stuttering, voice and swallowing.

The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service Speech Pathology Department aims to promote and facilitate effective communication and swallowing function, in order to maximize quality of life and social participation in the community. Within the context of a multi-disciplinary, holistic service we seek to:

  • Empower individuals
  • Ensure quality service through evidence-based practice
  • Provide early intervention
  • Be accountable to the local communities we serve

We provide the following services:

  • Individual therapy (When considered appropriate and necessary by the Speech Pathologist)


  • Group therapy
    1. Early Language Groups
      • Early language group
      • Language learning for littlies group
    2. Preschool Communication Groups
      • Younger and older preschool language groups
      • School-starters group
    3. Infants and Primary School Communication Groups
      • Phonological awareness (early literacy) group
      • Infants and primary school-aged language groups
    4. High School Communication Groups
      • Adolescent language group
      • High-school starters group
    5. Adult Groups
      • Communication groups for adults (e.g. post stroke group, Parkinson’s group)

  • Parent and carer training
    • Articulation (speech sounds) training talks
    • Carer information and support group


  • Professional education
    A consultative service is also provided to staff of nursing homes, retirement villages and professional associations. Regular workshops are also run to train preschool and school teachers in how to work with speech and language difficulties.

How you can access our service

  1. For adult services
    To make an inquiry or an appointment, contact Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Speech Pathology department on 9477 9554 (Monday-Friday, 8am-4.30pm)
  2. For paediatric services
    To make a referral for a child, one of the child’s parents must telephone the Speech Pathology intake line on Intake telephone number: 9477 9554. This operates on Wednesdays between 1-3pm only. Information obtained at this time by a qualified Speech Pathologist will be used to plan appropriate management.
  3. For those individuals requiring an assessment of their voice, a referral from an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist is required.

When referring a child for an assessment, telephone 9477 9554 on Wednesdays between 1-3pm. A Speech Pathologist will be available to take your call.

The Speech Pathology department is located in the Palmerston building of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, near Gate 6 on Derby Road. Our entrance is through the Mental Health waiting area and is well sign-posted.

  • When referring a child for an assessment, call the above number on Wednesdays between 1-3pm where a Speech Pathologist will be available to take your call.

When you arrive

Have a seat in the waiting room until your Speech Pathologist comes to meet you. You could also let our secretary know what you are there for and who your appointment is with.
