How you can access our service
There are three ways to access our service: as an elective operation booked by your surgeon,
through referral via a GP to one of the hospital’s outpatient clinics, or through the emergency department at HKHS.
- Elective operation: In the first instance, patients visit their GP. If it is decided that an operation is required, the GP will refer you to a specialist surgeon.
You will be booked in at a time convenient for both you and your surgeon.
- Outpatient Clinic: these clinics provide post-operative review for patients who have been operated on at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.
Some patients may be referred by their GP directly to the consultant-led Ear Nose & Throat clinic. If it is deemed necessary for you to have an operation,
then an operating theatre time will be booked for you.
- Emergency: If you present to the emergency department with a condition that
requires surgery, you will be seen by the relevant medical team who will book you into the
operating theatre at the earliest available time, depending on the seriousness of your condition
and operating theatre availability. Operating theatre staff are rostered on-call every day of the
year, so no matter what time of the day or night an emergency operation is required, there is
staff available.

When you arrive
After you have been checked-in by Admissions, you will be called into the Day Surgery Unit to prepare
for surgery. A nurse will take your observations and check your paperwork. You will then be required to
change into a theatre gown, hat and booties in preparation for surgery. Before you go to the operating
theatre you will be seen by an anaesthetist, who will assess your anaesthetic needs then formulate a
specific anaesthetic plan for you.
You will be asked several times by different people (the admitting nurse, the anaesthetist, the
anaesthetic nurse, the scrub nurse, the surgeon) your name, your date of birth, what operation you are
having and whether you have any allergies. This may seem excessive to you, however it is done as a
precautionary measure to make sure there are no misunderstandings each time you are handed over to a
different area.
When you enter the operating theatre you will be taken to the anaesthetic bay attached to the theatre.
Here you will have an intravenous infusion ("drip") commenced, some medication to help you relax may be
given to you through the drip. The anaesthetic nurse will attach monitoring equipment, he/she will make
sure you are comfortable and warm until it is time to go into the operating theatre.
