Volunteer Services at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital provide a large support network which includes Pink Ladies (and gentlemen), Florist and Gift Shop volunteers, playleaders in the Child and Adolescent Unit, and volunteers in various departments through out the hospital. Our volunteers are a diverse group of men and women who currently range in age from 21 years old to 90 years young. The care and friendliness of our volunteers continues to brighten the lives of thousands of patients.

Who are we?

Volunteer Services at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. We provide a large support network which includes Pink Ladies, Florist and Gift Shop volunteers, playleaders in the Child and Adolescent Unit, and volunteers in various departments through out the hospital.

Our volunteers are a diverse group of men and women who currently range in age from 21 years old to 90 years young. Many of our volunteers have been with us for 20 years or more and one has given 42 years faithful service. The care and friendliness of our volunteers contiunues to brighten the lives of thousands of patients. A recent publicity campaign has brought in a fresh ‘batch’ of new recruits, who reflect the multicultural nature of our local community, with volunteers originally from Mexico, Egypt, and Germany now serving as Pink Ladies and Florist and Gift Shop volunteers.

What do we do?

Every day our volunteers work behind the scenes to provide the following services:

  • Patient library service
  • Newspaper rounds
  • Shopping at the kiosk for toiletries and sweets
  • Arranging and caring for ward flowers
  • Running of the Pink Ladies Florist and Gift Shop
  • Craft and playtime with children in the Child and Adolescent Unit
  • Adult craft group
  • Patient hairdressing service
  • Reading and talking to patients
  • Internal courier service
  • General clerical support to a wide range of Hospital departments

Volunteers are invaluable members of our hospital community. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or have any questions, please contact the Volunteer Services Manager on 9477-9459.

Where you can find us

The Volunteer Services office is located on the campus of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, on the walkway near the Lumby Building, next to the Florist and Hairdresser.

What are our hours?

Volunteers generally work hours that suit their own circumstances. Most work from 9am until 2pm from Monday to Friday, although our hospital florists may work from 9am to 4pm. Lunch is provided in the hospital staff cafeteria for volunteers who work for 5 hours or more.

Volunteers also form part of the services in Community Centres: such as Berowra, Brooklyn, Galston, Hillview, Pennant Hills and Wisemans Ferry; as well as Meals on Wheels.

Pink ladies race to test some rehabilitation equipment made possible by their generous donationsThe Pink Ladies Auxiliary was established in 1962 and is reputedly the oldest volunteer group of its kind in Australia. The Pink Ladies Auxiliary has expanded beyond all expectations and now forms an integral and vital part of the high quality services delivered by the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service.

The Pink Ladies Auxiliary has been a generous financial supporter of the hospital. One donation of $50,000 purchased two major equipment items, one for the detection of cancer in women, and one to help patients with breathing difficulties in the Emergency Department. Another recent donation benefited several diverse area of our service.

Pink Ladies and Gentlemen are renowned for their pink uniforms and friendly smile. Becoming a volunteer at HKHS is an opportunity to make a difference in your local community and at the same time, have good fun and make lasting friendships that will stand the test of time.

Volunteers take part in the HKHS Orientation program and are part of the life of the hospital community. Badges and Certificates of Appreciation are awarded for length of service, and both the Annual General Meeting and the annual volunteer Christmas party are special events.
